Let’s be real, at this point, honesty and transparency feel like trendy wall decals slapped on conference rooms and core value posters. But when you peel back the motivational wallpaper, are we actually living those words?
There’s a difference between being honest and being transparent, and many of us are stuck working in cultures where we’re told to do both yet punished for either.
Definitions with a Punch
- Honesty = Telling the truth when asked. (Reactive integrity.)
- Transparency = Offering the truth before someone asks. (Proactive vulnerability.)
“Honesty is when you answer the question. Transparency is when you know the question is coming and you answer it anyway.”
Why It Matters
- Builds trust with your team and peers
- Reduces gossip, fear, and misunderstanding
- Enhances decision-making
- Prevents toxic culture cycles (the “just following orders” excuse dies here)
How to Spot the Gap
Ask yourself:
- Are leadership updates vague or always “TBD”?
- Is truth only shared when things hit the fan?
- Do people say “I didn’t lie,” but clearly withheld key info?
If so, you’re not in a transparent culture, you’re in a filtered one.
Resolution Isn’t One-Size-Fits-All
- For Employees:
Document patterns. Bring feedback to your leader during 1:1s. Push for clarity with curiosity, not confrontation. - For Leaders:
Admit when you’ve held back. Reward openness. Create a feedback loop that’s psychological safety-first. - For the Whole Team:
Normalize the difference. Post it. Teach it. Model it. Live it.
If honesty is the floor, transparency is the ceiling, and the best workplaces aren’t afraid to build a room with both.
